Jan (John) Baptist(a) Van Helmont (1580-1644) was a Flemish physician, chemist, and mystic, best known for his invention of the word "gas" and its introduction into the vocabulary of science. He recognized the existence of gases separate from atmospheric air, and identified carbon dioxide. In this volume, Oriatrike, Van Helmont wrote extensively about digestion and proposed that it was aided by a chemical reagent, or "ferment" very similar to our modern understanding of enzymes. . KCMS.
