Financia…l and governmental institutions were still immature and ill-prepared to handle a calamity of such magnitude. Despite these shortcomings, there was no alternative but to make the attempt. The essays in this volume are designed to capture the essence of dustbowl and depression days in Oklahoma, but no effort has been made to present a comprehensive history of the New Deal. Instead, we offer glimpses of various groups and agencies, some public, some private, some state and federal -- all coping with adversity, and trying to forge a rebirth of civilization and the good life in a cauldron of disaster.
