Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Flower of Joy by Hendrik DeLeeuw. Hardcover 1944 edition, early printing in red textured papered boards with faded spine lettering. Poor condition without a dust jacket. The top 1 ¾ inches of the spine is missing, exposing the text block. The front gutter is cracked along its entire length, with heavy edge and corner wear. That said, the binding remains in decent shape with intact and uncracked hinges. The interior pages are clean and unmarked, though tanned. This book provides a compelling look at drug use and efforts to control illicit substances in the late 1930s and early 40s. DeLeeuw, a former narcotics investigator for the League of Nations, recounts his travels through Egypt, India, Persia, French Indo-China, the East Indies, China, Japan, Nazi Germany, and the United States. He explores the production, use, and cultural impact of drugs such as opium, heroin, hashish, and marijuana, including their role in ritual practices, prostitution, and organized crime. The book also examines the paradox of government attempts to regulate drug use while often profiting from its taxation and sale. The book will be carefully packaged for shipment to ensure protection from the elements. A USPS electronic tracking number will be issued free of charge. Feel free to contact us for more information or pictures regarding the book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloNew York: Willey Book Co., (1944). 241pp. Sm. 8vo. Publisher's paper-covered boards. Edges of boards with brief rubbing to top and bottom; very good in a good dust jacket, chipped at head and tail and rear panel soiled. Early reprint of this 1939 international "tour of investigation" exoticizing Asian and Middle Eastern cultures (among others) and discussing their citizen's methods to get high, whether from indigenous or imported narcotics. A chapter on "Narcotics, Nazis and Sadism" and then a chapter on the writhing, sweaty, possessed, and knife-wielding young women seen in "Balinese Dagger Dance" (they slash themselves in their drug-induced fever) are nonchalantly paired with chapters such as "French Views on Prostitution and Dope" and "India's Doped Babies." De Leeuw's last chapter asks America to self-reflect on its own relationship with illicit drugs. This "take-a-look-in-the-mirror" suggestion is represented, perhaps, by the completely-new dust jacket artwork for this particular war-time reprint. The front panel shows a prostitute and her well-dressed male customer relaxing and getting high in a hotel room. The spine panel has a vignette of another "woman in red" smoking (insert a noun of something illicit here) in silhouette. An unknown metric is the number of those Americans who decided to try drugs after reading De Leeuw's sensationalistic book. Maybe more than a zip code's worth.…

[10], 3-241, [7] pp. Textured grey and white paper boards with brown lettering on the spine; red topstain. Price of $2.50 on the front flap of the dust jacket. An investigative memoir into the underground drug trade. DeLeeuw traveled to London, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Cairo, "Stamboul", Singapore, and a few places in India and China, ending his travels in New York City. The book discusses the impact of the drug trade on those involved, including those addicted to opium, sex workers who are connected to the trade, those who produce opium, those who transport it, and different governments' responses to the opium trade. Difficult to find in collectible condition. Endpapers are darkened with age, a tiny pink discoloration to the last few leaves; jacket with minor foxing on the flaps and a touch of sunning to the spine panel.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. "A revelation of the vast and menacing traffic in narcotic drugs. A vivid travel record of his voyages and explorations penetrating the hell-holes of five continents, the sensational facts he reveals about the sale and use of narcotics are from the direct observation and from information obtained from members of the 'dope ring', from authenticated reports and from inside information. His pictures of the depravity and human wretchedness that result from narcotics are all first-hand. The close connection between drugs and white slavery and prostitution is exposed." Near Fine but for small ink price at front free endpaper, in Very Good dustjacket, dime sized chip at top spine end, few small chips at lower spine end.…
