Konkurrenz und Eigendynamik dieser Medien verändern schließlich auch die Spielregeln des Erzählens selbst. Es entstehen Großnarrative, die unterschiedliche Generationen adressieren: So wird das Fernsehen zum Medium der Väter, das Kino zum Medium der Söhne. Den 'großen Erzählungen' der frühen 1960er Jahre spürt dieses Buch nach; es versteht sich als Baustein zu einer umfassenden Kulturgeschichte der DDR, die nicht mehr nur politisch motiviert ist.
