An important release, as the film had never before been screened in wide distribution in the US until 1982-only once at the New York Film Festival in September 1981. Melville's fourth film and first of a series of noir crime thrillers for which he would become famous. Well-regarded both as film noir and as part of the French New Wave, the latter because of its use of a single jump cut, location shooting, and use of a handheld camera for many shots.
