(etc.; ADB). - Berghaus gehört zu den deutschen Pionieren der 'Kostümkunde', die dabei war, die theoretischen und methodologischen Ansätze zu definieren, was unter den Prämissen von Positivismus, Kolonialismus und Eurozentrismus geschah : "Als Wissens-Produzenten wirken die Autoren von Kostümgeschichten bei der Erzeugung von Texten und Bildern vielfältiger genannter Volks- und Nationalkörper des ausgehenden 18. und beginnenden 19. Jahrhunderts mit. [.] Koloniale Grenzziehungen und Hierarchien fliessen epistemisch [i.e. wohl: erkenntnisleitend] in den Begriff der Mode ein [.]. [.] Dieser kolonialistische Modebegriff lässt sich zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts auch im Diskurs der Modezeitschriften finden. [.] Während diese Traktate jedoch [.] auf den kulturellen Klassifizierungen und Diversifizierungen von Volk, Nation und Stamm basierten, flossen später in den 1840er Jahren auch biologische Klassifikationen und der Rassebegriff in die Ordnungen des Kostüms ein. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist 'Die Völker des Erdballs [.]' von Heinrich Berghaus [.]. Das Kostüm wird nun auch zum 'Begriffsversuch' von 'Rasse' [.]. [.] Dabei klassifiziert er sowohl nach innen - auf Deutschland und Europa bezogen - als auch aussereuropäisch und untergliedert in Menschen-Rassen, Stufen, Arten und Stämme. Seine Typologie aussereuropäischer Kostüme visualisiert Repräsentationen dieser Menschen-Rassen, Stufen, Arten und Stämme und zeichnet dabei 'die Anderen' hier wiederholt als 'Eingeborene' mit abweisenden Gesichtsausdrücken." Double-page tinted lithographed title within ornamental border, [2, Key to the uniforms, verso blank]. Four fine double-page hand-colored lithographed plates, all mounted on stubs. All plates with imprint "H. HendricksX del" & "Imp Simonau & Toovey, Bruxelles". Occasional light marginal soiling, the colors bright. Publisher's half green morocco over green pebbled cloth boards ruled in gilt. Front cover with title in gilt, smooth spine ruled and horizontally lettered in gilt. Near fine. "The sign of the commandment, for all the chiefs of corps of the army is the egret. The epaulettes are used to distinguish the ranks of cavalry, artillery, engineers, the general staff, grenadiers and students of the military school. In the infantry, the ranks are indicated by means of stars embroidered on the front of the collar, one for the second lieutenant, two for the lieutenant and three for the captain. The senior officers also wear a braid. The officers of the various corps, detached to serve as aides-de-camp, keeping the uniform of their regiment, and have, as a sign of their particular service, the amaranth scarf, starting from the left shoulder towards the belt on the right. The Officers of the entire infantry wear the amaranth scarf at the waist on duty." (translation of key). Henri François Joseph Hendrickx (1817-1894) was a Belgian painter, engraver, and illustrator. Born in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, Henri was the son of the painter Jean Baptiste Henderickx, not to be confused with the Belgian politician of the same name, who signed himself "Hendrickx". The young man became a student of Gustave Wappers, professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1840, he participated in the illustration of Théodore Juste's History of Belgium, which appeared in installments from 1840. He was awarded a silver-gilt medal at the Brussels Salon of 1848 for The Macedonians annihilated by Belgius. He painted many still life and historical paintings. A designer and engraver, he created plates on behalf of the Belgian State, including banknotes and series of postal stamps, alongside Louis-Eugène Mouchon. Greece also ordered series of stamps from him. In 1856, he supervised with François Stroobant the production of lithographed illustrations for a publication intended to commemorate the celebrations of the 25 years of reign of Leopold I of Belgium, a work financed by Alexandre Jamar and which required the use of photography.
