Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Dialogue on Greed is the last Reformation dialogue published in 1524 by Hans Sachs (1494-1576), the Nuremberg shoemaker, prolific playwright, poet, and Meistersinger. In the text, the Catholic monk 'Romanus' and the Protestant merchant 'Junker Reichenburger' argue about the legitimacy of making profit with a liberal use of biblical references. Despite his own clear Protestant tendencies, Sachs has the monk draw a convincing picture of the malpractices of greedy merchants who misuse their new-won Protestant freedom to excuse themselves from any charitable work and take advantage of precariously employed workers. The volume brings together an introduction which places this dialogue in the historical context of Nuremberg, the first imperial city which only one year later openly declared its alliance to Martin Luther - not least because of pamphleteers such as Hans Sachs, with a discussion of the topic of greed which looks at the prehistory of the term as one of the seven deadly sins. An analysis of how the GDR responded to this as the self-proclaimed socialist German state forms the second part. The third part looks at the publishing history and then follows the way of the pamphlets into Oxford. A short practical guide on how to read the Early New High German texts closes the introduction. The edition comprises a new edition of the German text, based on the 1524 Nuremberg edition of the dialogue in the copy of the Bodleian Library, with linguistic footnotes and a new English translation which references the copious quotations from the Bible by Hans Sachs. This is followed by a facsimile of the whole pamphlet. The edition is part of the Reformation Pamphlet series of the Taylor Institution Library in Oxford which aims to make the treasures of the library accessible via open access editions on https: //editions.mml.ox.ac.uk/ and to bring together interdisciplinary expertise on different aspects of these historic holdings. Previous volumes have traced the success of Martin Luther's writings since the publication of the 95 Theses throughout the early 1520s, particularly his 1520 treatise Von der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen (On Christian Freedom) and the 1522 translation of the New Testament, and have also already published the first of Sachs's four Reformation dialogues. This edition introduces this work, until now not available in modern English translation, to historians, theologians and linguists through richly annotated editions and translation. The volume shows Sachs as an avid reader of Martin Luther's works and as an active translator himself. Furthermore, the illustrations throughout the volume and the facsimile at the end of the book give an insight into the material culture and history of Reformation rhetoric and its reception throughout history and in particular in the GDR.…

Hardcover. Condizione: gut. 2006. AutorKristina Jaspers, geb.
