Cloth. Condizione: Good. Clark, W. Appleton; Armstrong, Margaret (binding) (illustratore). First Edition. New York, NY, 1901, Charles Scribner's Sons. First edition. 8vo. Cobalt blue cloth with gilt lettering and pinecone design on spine and beautiful gilt artwork around the title ("THE RULING PASSION") on the front board, featuring pinecones and interwoven pine branches on a dark green field, beautifully illustrated throughout, rough-cut pages, 296 pp. From author's preface: "To tell about some of these ruling passions, simply, clearly, and concretely, is what I want to do in this book. The characters are chosen, for the most part, among plain people, because their feelings are expressed with fewer words and greater truth, not being costumed for social effect. The scene is laid on Nature's stage because I like to be out-of-doors." Owner name on endpaper and page 101. 1/8" tear at top of spine, pages tanned. An attractive book and a collection of written snapshots of life in another time. Good+.

Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Clark, W. Appleton. (illustratore). First Edition, First Printing. Cover design by Margaret Armstrong. 12mo, 7.5 inches tall; vii-x, [6] 3-296 [296] pages, 8 unnumbered leaves of plates by W. Appleton Clark. Top edge gilt, others uncut. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even age-toning. Modest shelf handling wear with tiny corner and spine tip rubs. A handsome copy. Van Dyke explores the ruling passions of characters primarily drawn from ordinary people, whose feelings are conveyed with simplicity and sincerity, free from the embellishments of social performance. He sets the scene in the great outdoors, reflecting his love of nature, and his stories focus on the lives and adventures of rural French Canadians toward the end of the 19th century. Though the tales typically conclude with the conventional Victorian happy ending, the resolutions are often unexpected, adding a layer of surprise that makes for a highly satisfying reading experience. [Adapted from reviews] Contents: +++ A lover of music, +++ The reward of virtue , +++ A brave heart, +++ The gentle life, +++ A friend of justice. +++ The white blot, +++ A year of nobility, +++The keeper of the light.
