Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. ANCIENT CARPENTERS' TOOLS, ILLUSTRATED AND EXPLAINED TOGETHER WITH THE IMPLEMENTS OF THE LUMBERMAN, JOINER AND CABINET MAKER IN USE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, Henry C. Mercer, hardcover, stated third edition of book originally published in 1929, illustrated with numerous photographs, 1960. BOOK CONDITION: good. This is not a remainder or library book. The green cloth boards are in good condition (corner and spine bumping, shelf wear). 10 x 6 ½, 331 pages, 36 ounces. XX [From the preface of the first edition] "The woodworking tools by which man, since the beginning of the Iron Age, has helped himself to supply one of the most important and universal of his needs, namely shelter, are, and long have been, among the chief agents of his so-called civilization. Nevertheless, despite their great significance, they have been so generally overlooked by historians, travelers and antiquaries, and so imperfectly accounted for by technical writers, that the following attempt to illustrate and describe, as nearly as possible, all of them, seems justified. Because the application of mechanical power to carpenters' tools in the nineteenth century has superseded many of them, and, while vastly increasing the efficiency, has obscured the construction of others, an artificial limit has set to the following investigation, which for clearness sake does not attempt to deal with the woodworking machinery of the present day, but, stopping at the so-called industrial revolution, or soon after 1820, confines itself to the tools as they appear in the eighteenth century, in their simple and unchanged form. Except for purposes of comparison, the specimens here shown have been collected in the United States, chiefly in Pennsylvania, but a short study of them will soon convince us, that though made in America, they were not invented there, but represent long-existing types of world-wide use, brought thither by the Colonists; hence, that the collection is neither local nor national, but international and of general ethnologic interest. Still more surprising seems the fact that a large proportion of these continually-used implements of the eighteenth century, have remained unchanged in construction since Roman times. Therefore, they are of far more extended industrial interest than the woodworking machines of today, which, despite their economic importance, have at most only been with us for about a hundred years. To weigh the historic significance or universal distribution of these ancient tools, is to realize that all attempts to display them in order to glorify modern machinery can only distort history.
