The Dust jacket is complete except for a 1" trapazoid chip upper right front, chips at spine ends and a short tear center front bottom edge. Quite preserved in new mylar covering. The DJ has titles on front and spine that state; "New York in the Seventies and other sketches, Eight beautiful colored plates, Sixty rare views, prints, etc." 412 pp + and index through page 448. A large fold out of "Lower Manhattan from Brooklyn Bridge South, as it appeared in 1876" (at the top) and "Same View 1917" below. 15" tall and 29" wide unfolded. Another, colored, fold out of "Peter Stuyvesant's Army Entering New Amsterdam". An interesting collection of facts and information. Photos are all sepia. The color plates have tissue guards.

In 1841 David Valentine began publishing an annual compilation of New York with historical information to show the citizenry the progress the city made each year. It was published under the title, Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, a compendium of historical materials with illustrations, but it became known as Valentine's Manual. It included maps, lithographs and woodcuts, and contained many statistical tables, lists of social institutions, banks, schools, churches etc.
