Three essays form what Guerlac described as a "reputation study," tracing Newton's… intellectual fortunes on the Continent, particularly in France. Two additional essays explore European influences reflected in Newton's earliest surviving notebook. The illustrations include two of Newton's optical sketches later used in the principal sections of the French edition of the Opticks. Guerlac considers how Newtonian science crossed linguistic and national boundaries, how continental scholars interpreted and adapted Newton's theories, and how Newton himself absorbed elements of European intellectual traditions. The volume offers a focused contribution to Newton studies, the history of optics and physics, and the broader circulation of scientific ideas during the Enlightenment. Pencil notations reading approximately "IP 1995" and "13.50" appear at the upper edge of the half-title; no additional writing, underlining, or ownership markings are visible in the photographed portions.
