Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage, Limitierte Ausgabe. First edition, deluxe issue, one of only 175 numbered copies, of this important catalogue of the wartime Loan Exhibition of Japanese art and craft. Prepared by Henry L. Joly in collaboration with the curator Kumasaku Tomita, the volume documents an exceptional assembly of Japanese works drawn from major private collections in Britain. Organised by the renowned dealers Yamanaka & Co., the exhibition was one of the most ambitious presentations of Japanese art mounted in Britain during the First World War, held in aid of the British Red Cross. The catalogue offers authoritative commentary on a wide range of media central to Japanese material culture, including painting, prints, sculpture, lacquer, netsuke, inro, bronzes, ceramics, enamels, and textiles. Of particular note is the extensive treatment of sword fittings, especially tsuba, reflecting contemporary Western scholarly and collecting interest in Japanese metalwork. The visual component is a principal strength. A substantial suite of plates, largely collotype, provides rich, finely graded photographic reproductions, supplemented by colour plates highlighting selected masterpieces. These form a sumptuous visual record of the exhibition. Issued in a strictly limited edition and rarely encountered, this catalogue remains a significant scholarly resource and a distinguished example of early twentieth century art book production. Folio (32.5 x 25.0 cm). Text in English. With 170 full-page plates, including a small number printed in colour on glossy stock, the remainder finely reproduced in collotype on matte paper. Contemporary red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Housed in a modern red leather-backed custom slipcase. Slipcase a little snug, with very slight rubbing to the extremities of the boards from the close fit. A few small, neat pencil annotations. Otherwise, a very good copy of this valuable documentary source for the history of Japanese art collecting in the West. Owing to the size and weight of this book, additional postage charges may apply.…
