Larsen was commander of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Schooner "St. Roch", first vessel ever to pass by the North-West Passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic, and the first to make the return voyage in 1948. It was built at the Burrard Drydock, North Vancouver, in 1942-1944. In 1950 the "St. Roch" sailed from Vancouver to Halifax via the Panama Canal and so became the first ship to circumnavigate the North American continent.
