Fine blue cloth hardcover with bright gilt spine titles, 466 clean and unmarked pp. Good + dust jacket with minor edge-wear, small chip top edge rear, a little spotting due to age. Dj now in a clear protective wrapper. "The world of signs has all the fullness of a whol…e life - a theandric life - which 'signifies.' Among these signs, certain ones have particular importance, through the will of Christ who instituted them. First among these are Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of the Pasch, the sacraments of Christian initiation, of the redeemed people, of the Church. Baptism and the Eucharist sum up the whole mystery of Christ, our whole liturgy, all our feasts, our entire worship, our whole Christian life, and all our hopes. They are the cornerstone and the crowning of the whole sacramental structure." - Introduction.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Good condition green boards with black front cover lettering. Exceedingly rare one hundred copies printed only for private circulation. Includes Note by Henry Phillips, Jr. dated January, 1881, Philadelphia. Translated from the German by Henry Phillips, Jr. The spine is worn in certain areas. All pag…es are in fine unmarked condition (see photographs). The verso of the title page states: "One hundred copies printed only for private circulation No," No number is written or printed in the blank space after the abbreviation for the word "number" (No). "The present poem is one of the twenty-nie Fausts, by various authors, which appeared in Germany, during the sixty-one years in which Goethe was employed upon his masterpiece. Adalbert Von Chamisso, unfortunately best known by his least important work (Peter Schlemihl), has sunk into unmerited oblivion; and under the impression that this poem has never before appeared in our language, I have ventured to translate it, although merely a sketch, not entirely free from obscurities. Chamisso was a ripe scholar, a naturalist of high rank, and has been characterized as "a hale, hearty, sinewy poet." - Henry Phillips, Jr., Philadelphia, January, 1881 - from preliminary page entitled Note.
