Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth analysis of the military strategies and bureaucratic challenges faced by the Union Army as it attempted to establish control over Virginia during the American Civil War. It begins with the appointment of General Henry M. Naglee to command the Department of Virginia, and continues through his efforts to secure the area, stabilize the civilian population, and address the issue of contraband trading and smuggling. Using Naglee's report to the Department of Virginia and North Carolina as a primary source, the author provides a detailed account of the general's military tactics, including the construction of defensive lines, the use of gunboats to monitor waterways, and the employment of local civilians as guides to counter guerrilla warfare. The book also sheds light on the complex relationship between the military and civilian authorities during wartime, and examines the challenges of maintaining law and order in a region torn by conflict. Through its exploration of these themes, the book offers valuable insights into the complexities of military occupation and the interplay between military and civilian governance during a period of national upheaval. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Cover a tad soiled and age toned, else clean and attractive. Text of Naglee's September 27, 1864 letter to William D. Kelley. Pages 5-8 consist of "Second Chapter from the Secret History of the War," Naglee's October 6, 1864 letter to Kelley. Not in Monaghan, but just as cryptic bibliographically and clearly a variant of some sort. (Interestingly, Monaghan mentions "A Chapter from the Secret History of the War" and "First Chapter from the Secret History of the War" as variant titles -- but never any "Second Chapter.") Unusual. DORNBUSCH 51720 note (where a publication year of 1862 is mistakenly hazarded).
