The author visited well-known sites as well as lesser-known monasteries to inquire about existing manuscripts, either to read them or to purchase them. During the mission, the author visited Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, Turkey, and Thessaly in search of unknown manuscripts. While some of the author's inquiries were fruitless, many others bore success as the author was able to locate a great number of unknown manuscripts to read and in some cases purchase. In the end, the author was not able to purchase as many manuscripts as he would have liked as some of the monasteries had become aware of the value of these texts and were no longer willing to sell them. This book provides insights into the world of manuscript collection in the mid-19th century and the challenges faced by those attempting to recover and preserve ancient texts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
