This book, compiled by Henry Orielly, compiles documents relating to the efforts of New York citizens to form regiments of Colored Volunteers amid the urgency of the Civil War. The author underscores the challenges involved in overcoming resistance and bureaucracy to create opportunities for African Americans to fight for their freedom and the preservation of the Union. At a time when the nation was bitterly divided, the book sheds light on the motivations and obstacles faced by those who championed the cause of equal rights and the eradication of slavery, urging readers to confront the complexities of such a transformative period in American history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

16pp, bound in modern plain wrappers. Last leaf with some chipping to the blank inner margin. A couple of spots. Good+. O'Rielly, who came to Rochester from Ireland, made major contributions to the development of the telegraph, first in collaboration with Samuel Morse and then as a competitor. He claims here to have been the "constructor of the first telegraph lines which electrically connected the United States." He argues forcefully for federal protection of transcontinental routes as a necessity for the Nation's development, independent of European powers. Such protection is necessary to encourage settlements, assure the proper functioning of the postal service and telegraph systems, and facilitate rail and other transportation.

35th Cong., 1st session. An interesting memorial relating to establishing protected overland mail routes, a telegraph line to the Pacific, and related issues of railroad communication in the western states. The final two pages comprise a Memorial by Henry O'Rielly, John J. Speed, and Tal. P. Shaffner, concerning the completion of telegraph lines to Fort Laramie and Salt Lake. Modern half morocco and cloth by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Very good.
