Aggiungi al carrelloLitterateur and Journalist, editor of the "Edinburgh Review" (1813-1895). Four pages, 8vo, foxing, text clear. Reeve has received an article by Tuckwell on "the Literature of the 18th Century . . . Its defect seems to me to be that in title, in spirit, & in substance, it is somewhat too wide & vague - an article more appropriate for an Encyclopaedia than to a Review." He would have preferrd a paper of 20-25 pages on a specific topic such as Latimer's prose. "In writing for the Reviews there is no greater mistake than to embrace too large a field" resulting in a lack of "point". Reeve couldn't publish the article before July next year by promises that he would then if Tuckwell were inclined to wait. "Papers of this general character are apt to be thrust aside by those having a more pressing call for insertion." He would welcome further contributions. He realises mid-flow that he has obligations fro July next, but offers a slot in October next. A useful insight into one Review's editorial policy.

Complete two volume set in slipcase. Full title - DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA BY ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE; THE HENRY REEVE TEXT AS REVISED BY FRANCIS BOWEN NOW FURTHER CORRECTED AND EDITED WITH INTRODUCTION, EDITORIAL NOTES, AND BIBLIOGRAPHIES BY PHILLIPS BRADLEY. VOLS. I + II. Thirteenth printings (as stated upon each volume's respective copyright page; originally published April 1945). Brown cloth slipcase, H 22.75cm x L 16cm, with inner white felt lining; some external rubbing with slender scratch to top panel; seams are firm. Undecorated clear acetate/mylar dust jackets lightly rubbed. Both hardcover volumes, H 21.75cm x L 15cm, in handsome dark brown leather-style binding; four slightly raised bands to spines; bright gilt stamping to boards and spines; Volume I's front board personalized with gilt lettered "Robert E. Cannon" at bottom center (rear colophon credits typographic scheme and binding design to W.A. Dwiggins - William Addison Dwiggins, 1880-1956, but, of course, that must reference the original edition as this 1980 set is posthumous). Gilt top edges; deckle fore-edges. Faux marbling effect to front and rear endpapers. Interior pages are bright and clean. Bindings retain some crispness. A fine set in a near fine slipcase. VOLUME I: [2], i-cxiv, 1-434, i-xii, [3] pages. VOLUME II: [2], i-xiv, 1-401, [1], i-x, [2] pages. The most attractive modern edition of DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA encountered by this bookseller; no publisher statement explaining the binding so curious whether this was a special issue by Knopf or perhaps a post-purchase rebinding by the aforementioned owner Robert E. Cannon (no bookbindery ticket present to aid such a determination) - the presence of a very sturdy slipcase seems indicative of a specialist binder as publisher trade slipcases rarely reflect such rigid construction. Acquired from a Tupelo, Mississippi estate with no further provenance known. Issued as part of Alfred A. Knopf's "The American Past: An Informal Series." Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

The journals of the reigns of George IV and William IV, extending from 1817 to 1837, were published in obedience to his directions almost ten years after his death. Few publications have been received with greater interest by the public; five large editions were sold in little more than a year, and the demand in America was as great as in England. These journals were regarded as a faithful record of the impressions made on the mind of a competent observer, at the time, by the events he witnessed and the persons with whom he associated. The recipient ('Dear Sir') is not named, but is presumably Alexander Macmillan (see Oxford DNB), the publisher of the two books referred to in the letter, which he seems to have sent for review. The letter is signed 'H Reeve'. Folded for postage. He begins by thanking him for sending copies of 'Lady Duff Gordon's Letters [from Egypt]' and 'Ecce Homo' ['a survey of the life and work of Jesus Christ' by J. R. Seeley], which he has 'already read with great interest'. He takes 'a very different view of it from Lord Shaftesbury &c', and intends to 'take the first opportunity of saying [so] in the Edinburgh Review', although he will not be able to publish the articles before the next October. He concludes: 'Mr. Baker is wonderfully amusing & the man is a real Hero in his way.'.
