Wells. As both man and poet, the late Wallace Stevens holds an extraordinary place in American letters. A prominent insurance executive who devoted his leisure to writing verse at once brilliant and obscure, Stevens stands as one of the few radical innovators of our century in the theory and practice of poetry. Many of his poems resist a first reading, and both the man and his work are difficult to comprehend. As in the case of Ezra Pound and James Joyce, the reader may often welcome initial guidance. In this 'Introduction,' Mr. Wells does much to clarify Stevens' unique and original contribution. Wells recognizes Stevens' interest in the philosophy of poetry and his conviction that in our period the imaginative artist must fill the gap left by a decline of religious belief and symbolism. He discusses in detail the welding of imagination to the precision of form which occurs throughout Stevens' works, the constant ironic guard against sentimentalism, the abstractions against emotionalism. Adroitly familiarizing the reader with these ideas and mannerisms of the poet, Mr. Wells does not propose, however, that his guide can replace the poetry itself; he offers his comment as a midwife to assist at the birth of a real understanding. Since his first delighted reading of Harmonium, Henry W. Wells has been a devoted student of Wallace Stevens' poetry. In addition, he has produced numerous articles, books, and translations, both in the U.S. and abroad, on an amazing variety of themes ranging from Seneca to Dylan Thomas, and from Mexican colonial architecture to Australian balladry. He has also edited several collections of plays and poems, and has written a small quantity of original verse. From 1920 to 1960 he taught at Columbia University, and since 1948 he has served as Curator of the Brander Matthews Dramatic Museum at Columbia.…
