The narrative given in this book is based upon notes generally recorded of the day on which the events described occurred. A diary was regularly kept and in addition a separate account was always written while the facts were fresh in the memory of anything that appeared of special interest. When we were preparing for the expedition we found great difficulty in getting information as to the country and especially as to what should be taken with us and what left to be purchased at Srinagar. And when we arrived in Kashmir we did not find it easy to ascertain the correct prices of things or the rates that should be paid for services rendered. The chapters containing suggestions on these points were written to save others who might be similarly situated from the trouble we experienced. The illustrations are all from the private album of the author. As explained in the text most of my negatives proved failures but a few were found fit to reproduce.
