The stunning images encourage reflection on the significance of these Eastern Borderlands, especially after their loss more than seventy years ago.Following the Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, these regions experienced a pivotal change in their historical context. For centuries, from the era of King Casimir the Great and King Wladyslaw Jagiello, these areas were integral to the Polish nation, forming part of the Kingdom of Poland and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The union formed in the 16th century solidified a common existence between the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, influencing the identity of the people in these territories. The reshaping of national boundaries following World War I further complicated this narrative, as Poles fought to reclaim independence and grappled with the aspirations of Byelorussians and Ukrainians in those lands.The Eastern Borderlands embody a complex tapestry of ethnicities, having been inhabited by Poles, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, as well as Armenians, Tatars, Czechs, and Germans over centuries.
