This paper analyses the different narrative strategies and their effects on the Western reader in greater detail through traditional close reading strategies.While 'When the Emperor was Divine' narrates the collective trauma through alternating, individual perspectives of a representative Japanese family, 'The Buddha in the Attic' manages to create a more powerful communal voice with its consistent first-person plural narration.

The first narrative is the legend of the goddess Bon Bibi. Passed down orally from generation to generation, the rhythmic legend sediments itself in the minds of the tide country people, defines how they see their homeland and thus actively, and repeatedly, constructs and reconstructs the space of the tide country. The second narrative is Nirmal's recollection of his repeated adventures to Morichjhapi. Unlike the legend of Bon Bibi, his adventures are transmitted in writing through his notebook. Accessible to Kanai and the reader only, its content shapes and constructs how both character and reader perceive and construct the space of the historical island.However, it also works the other way around. The place of the tide country also influences the narratives that evolve around it. The Bon Bibi legend is as fluid as the tide country, being (re)interpreted from generation to generation. Nirmal's notebook as well reflects the main characteristics of the tide country as it travels on water (on the Megha) and ultimately also disappears in water (like the tide country eventually will as well).In this paper, a close textual analysis of both embedded narratives reveals how they manage to (re)construct the space of the tide country for both characters and readers (i.e. which narrative strategies are used etc.) and what distinct topographical characteristics of the tide country can be found within them. In sum, this paper claims that narratives have the ability to construct the space(s) we live in. Cultural geography examines how places and identities are produced. It looks into how people of a certain culture and place perceive their 'homeland' or, inverse, how they construct it with the help of cultural artefacts. Cultural artefacts like folktales or songs can contribute to the construction of space since they describe and determine how people view and perceive the places around them. Whatever cultural artefacts people produce give insight into how they see their space. Narratives as cultural artefacts, for example, can thus show us how spaces are perceived by those who 'tell' and 'consume' them.

With an average rating of 4.42 out of 5 stars, it compares to all-time favorites like the Lord of the Rings (4.51/5) or Game of Thrones (4.45/5) series. A distant reading of 300 selected goodreads reviews on Girl, Woman, Other revealed that the Booker Prize was frequently mentioned in their reviews. The award serves as 'attention booster' for the, up until then, to mainstream readership only lesser known Evaristo. Further, a comparative keyword analysis of the selected reviews and the respective The Guardian review revealed that goodreads readers tend to focus more on characters and review on a more personal/emotional level. Therefore, Girl, Woman, Other is as successful since it establishes a personal relationship between narrative and readers. It was thus the aim of this paper to analyze the respective narrative strategies which manage to establish this connection through both distant as well as close reading strategies.

Through experimental form and style, approachable characters and humorous style of writing, Evaristo successfully draws the contemporary reader into the story world and educates her on the constructedness of cognitive borders and social categorizations (sex, gender, age, race, class et cetera). After the reader crosses the border into the story world, she follows the individual journeys of the fictional characters with the help of mind-reading and narrative empathy and leaves the story world with differences in cognitive processing¿ followed by effects on ¿cognition, perception and action. To empirically analyse the educational, border-crossing effect of a literary work that reaches beyond the reading experience, this paper uses reception data from Goodreads in the form of reader profile information and reviews on ¿The Emperor¿s Babe¿, ¿Mr. Loverman¿ and ¿Girl, Woman, Other¿. After a theoretical introduction to the historic development of the academic interest in both border and (empirical) reception studies, the results section will outline the major findings of a descriptive statistical analysis of the retrieved data for the reception of all novels. Each novel¿s reception will then be looked at individually through distant and close reading of the respective book¿s narrative techniques. A discussion section will compare the findings of the distant and close readings of all three books under discussion. The paper will close with a critical summary of the findings in the conclusion and give an outlook on the advantages and opportunities provided by the study of the subversive, border-crossing effects of literature in general. The influence of fiction on a reader¿s personal life and social cognition has been of interest to academia ever since the beginnings of reader-response criticism and the cognitive turn of the 1980s. Literature, after all, has the power to serve as a springboard for subversive thought, the precursory movement of a transformation of social and cultural structures. Reader response and reception theorists, cognitive literary critics and empirical receptionists have thus been trying to empirically explain the transformative, subversive powers of literature.

To empirically analyse the educational, border-crossing effect of a literary work that reaches beyond the reading experience, this paper uses reception data from Goodreads in the form of reader profile information and reviews on ¿The Emperor¿s Babe¿, ¿Mr. Loverman¿ and ¿Girl, Woman, Other¿. After a theoretical introduction to the historic development of the academic interest in both border and (empirical) reception studies, the results section will outline the major findings of a descriptive statistical analysis of the retrieved data for the reception of all novels. Each novel¿s reception will then be looked at individually through distant and close reading of the respective book¿s narrative techniques. A discussion section will compare the findings of the distant and close readings of all three books under discussion. The paper will close with a critical summary of the findings in the conclusion and give an outlook on the advantages and opportunities provided by the study of the subversive, border-crossing effects of literature in general. The influence of fiction on a reader¿s personal life and social cognition has been of interest to academia ever since the beginnings of reader-response criticism and the cognitive turn of the 1980s. Literature, after all, has the power to serve as a springboard for subversive thought, the precursory movement of a transformation of social and cultural structures.
