The thinly brushed color and blurry outlines in later works such as the 'Odalisques' and the 'Bathers' of 1918-1919 (a picture that Renoir described as 'a springboard for future research'), were much admired by an up-and-coming generation of avant-garde artists, who gravitated to their sensuality and to the fleshy richness of his nudes-qualities which have made his art so hugely popular and so widely reproduced. In the wealth of color illustrations in this book-which accompanies a major touring exhibition organized by the Reunion des Musees Nationaux, the Musee d'Orsay and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in collaboration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art-it is possible to see clearly the influence that Renoir had on younger artists such as Bonnard, Matisse and Picasso, as well as how they received and studied his work.Along with Monet and Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was a founder of the style that became known as Impressionism, and one of its most prolific members. La plupart, sans doute, ignorent l'histoire mouvementée de cette ?uvre d'Aristide Maillol (1861-1944).En 1937, à l'occasion de l'Exposition internationale de Paris, l'artiste, alors au…sommet de sa carrière, dispose de trois salles dans l'Exposition des Maîtres de l'art indépendant. À soixante-quinze ans, il a décidé de marquer l'événement en créant son ?uvre la plus ambitieuse : Les Trois Nymphes. Cette variation sur le thème ancien des Trois Grâces va contribuer à sa consécration comme « le plus grand sculpteur français vivant ».L'?uvre attire les photographes : Brassaï, Erwin Blumenfeld, Robert Doisneau. Durant l'Occupation elle suscite aussi l'intérêt des nazis qui s'en emparent. C'est au terme d'une véritable enquête que son histoire, avec ses multiples péripéties, a pu être retracée. Installé au Carrousel depuis 1965, à l'initiative d'André Malraux et Dina Vierny, ce groupe continue de fasciner par sa simplicité et sa grâce intemporelles.

Ce "dernier portrait" - masque mortuaire, peinture, dessin ou photographie - demeurait dans le… cercle étroit de la famille et des amis, mais, dans le cas de personnalités, il pouvait faire l'objet d'une large diffusion publique.
