Frontispiece large black and white captioned photo of the author. Notes at the end of each chapter. Black and white photo of Herberg and Anderson on the rear panel of the dust jacket. Dust jacket even so slightly shelfworn, but not price-clipped. "Herberg maintains that Judaism and Christianity, despite their differences, share a fundamental unity of religious perspective. "Both are historical religions in the profound sense that, for both, religion is faith enacted as history--incapable of being expressed, understood, or communicated apart from the history in and through which it is enacted.' The twenty essays, by the Jewish theologian and philosopher who has been acclaimed as 'the Reinhold Niebuhr of Judaism,' are present in three interrelated parts. Part I: The Posture of Faith; Part II: The Understanding of Faith; and Part III: The Witness of Faith in the World. [from the dust jacket] William Herberg (1901 - 1977) was an American writer, intellectual and scholar. A communist political activist during his early years, Herberg gained wider public recognition as a social philosopher and sociologist of religion, as well as a Jewish theologian. He was Professor of Philosophy and Culture in Drew University. Bernhard Word Anderson was Professor of Old Testament Theology in Princeton Theological Seminary. Herberg and Anderson enjoyed a strong friendship over a period of years which involved weekly meetings for conversation.
