This edition was published in Leipzig by Insel, in its Insel - Bücherei series (No. 419), which were small, colorful, paper-decorated hardcovers. CONDITION -- Near Very Good -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The title label on spine is darkened and chipped, with small loss; slight weathering (toning) about the edges; front title label is somewhat dulled; there is nicking and chipping about the edges and joints; board surfaces have modest rub; text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING : The book has obviously been read and thus is not as tight as when issued however no leaves are detached or loose; the boards have a slight bulge. INTERIOR : The paper is toned and likely somewhat fragile (typical of paper in German books from that era); There is an inked signature, with date on the front of a previous owner (Feldmann / 14 Dec 51). There are two small penciled notations , either from the publisher or binder, otherwise the interior is clean and free of marking. Exax was educated at the Art Institute of Experimental Graphics (Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt) under Rudolf von Larisch , among others. from 1914 to 1917 he was a War Photographer for the Austrian Army and some of his photos can be seen in many newspapers from those days.from 1921 to 1925 he moved first to Greece and then to Italy where he worked as a Freelance Graphic Artist.after returning to Vienna, he founded his own company that didn't bring him the desired results, so he opened a new studio named 'Exax-Antl' where he worked until 1945 when he moved to Carinthia , continuing to work as a graphic artist.
