Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1976 Dutch textile specialist Rens Heringa first visited Kerek in rural East Java and discovered a region whereunlike the rest of Javathe full range of textiles with woven patterning, as well as the only batik still made on handwoven cotton cloth, continued to be produced for local use. Each type of cloth made in Kerek is created for a specific purposeto be worn by a person of a particular age, social, or residential group; to serve in life-cycle events such as marriage or funerals; to act as a focal point in agricultural ceremonies or curing rites. The functions, techniques, patterning, and especially the color combinations of the cloth all form part of a highly structured and elaborate system of belief that is remarkably integrated with the community's social organization, mythology, and ritual practices. Remnants of similarly integrated systems of belief are known from many parts of Java, but by the late 20th century the full system could be observed only in Kerek. Batik from Kerek today represents the antecedents of the courtly and urban batik found in collections around the world. Each type of cloth made in Kerek is created for a specific purpose - to be worn by a person of a particular age, social or residential group; to serve in life-cycle events such as marriage or funerals; and to act as a focal point in agricultural ceremonies or curing rites. This book deals with this topic. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 1st. 239 pages, illustrations (some colour); 31 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, October 31, 1996 to January 26, 1997. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "The batik designs of Java's North Coast are particularly varied in both design and colour. With their fanciful, highly imaginative motifs and luminous tints, they are more immediately appealing than the sombre blue and brown batik of Central Java. It was a chance encounter in a Hong Kong antique shop that inspired photojournalist Inger McCabe Elliot to devote over three decades to assembling one of the world's finest collections, which she presented to the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in 1991. This volume, published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum, celebrates Elliott's gift and presents her collection. Essays by authorities on the subject examine the 82 featured batik textiles from historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives. The essays are followed by biographies of some of the most distinguished batik designers and entrepreneurs and a descriptive catalogue of the batiks. Appendices document design formats and motifs, as well as the complete production process of North Coast batiks." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.
