Dutch Voor de derde maal, na Slauerhoff en Willem en Jeanne Kloos, (het deel Ritter-Slauerhoff verscheen in de kwarto-reeks) wordt een briefwisseling gepubliceerd uit het rijke, uit tienduizenden brieven bestaande Archief Ritter in de Utrechtse Universiteitsbibliotheek, geordend door Jan van Herpen. Herman de Man, in 1898 te Woerden geboren en in 1946 bij een vliegramp op Schiphol overleden, is de auteur van zo?n twintig romans, geschreven tussen 1922 en 1940. Ze werden gretig gelezen en vaak herdrukt. In 1986 zond de NCRV nog een televisiebewerking uit van Het wassende water. In 1940 overviel de oorlog Herman de Man die in een chalet in de Franse Alpen aan een nieuwe roman werkte. Via Lissabon wist hij Londen te bereiken, waar hij meewerkte aan Radio Oranje. In 1943 vloog hij naar Curaçao om daar de leiding van de omroep op zich te nemen. Toen hij in 1945 terugkeerde naar ons land waren zijn vrouw en zijn vijf jongste kinderen door de Duitsers vergast en was zijn zoon Jan doodgeschoten. Tot schrijven kwam Herman de Man niet meer. Dr. P.H. Ritter Jr. (1882-1962), hoofdredacteur van het Utrechtsch Dagblad en boekbespreker bij de AVRO, heeft Herman de Mans talent snel ingezien. Tussen 1923 en 1948 heeft hij in krant, radio of tijdschrift 24 maal een boek van de populaire auteur besproken. Zij kenden elkaar goed. Hun omgang (persoonlijk en in geschrifte) naderde de vriendschap. Herman de Man was conventioneel en fantasierijk, Ritter wat formeler. De titel van het boek is ontleend aan een brief van Herman de Man. In 1986 verscheen de bondige biografie Herman de Man van Henk Povée. Toch blijven velen, zeker in de kring van de Vereniging Herman de Man, naar een lijviger levensbeschrijving uitzien. De onderhavige briefwisseling draagt belangrijk nieuw materiaal aan voor zo?n geschrift. Archief Ritter II.
