Present and future advances in atomic tech nology urgently require further work on research and development in the field of radiation biology if the maximum benefit is to be obtained at minim…al risk from the various kinds of radiation that form a major by product of nuclear processes. Consequently, it is also necessary to prepare students and younger scientists for doing such work. The present book originates from teaching experience gained in lectures, seminars, and discussion groups started by the undersigned in 1957 and more recently held together with Drs. Dertinger and Jung. The friendly comments given to the German edition made us feel that it might be worth while to put the results of our efforts at the disposal of those to whom English is more familiar. In agreement with the view, based on well-known facts, that most if not aIl of the more striking practical achievements have resulted from patient and careful investigations into some basic problem, the book aims at introducing the reader to the methods of thought and experiment used in molecular radiation biology as weIl as to the results obtained thereby.

Dabei bildeten Dis kussionen eine Kontrolle des Erfolgs wie auch die Grundlage fur Ver anderungen der Darstellung. Die Vorlesungen und Seminare wurden in den Jahren 1957-1968 zunachst yom Unterzeichneten allein, spater gemeinsam mit den Autoren, Dr. H. Dertinger und Dr. H. Jung, sowie unter Mitwirkung der Herren Prof. A. Catsch, Prof. U. Hagen, Priv. Doz. G. Hotz und Priv.-Doz. A. Muller durchgefuhrt, deren konstruk tive und kritische Beitrage von ebenso groBer Bedeutung waren wie die mancher Horer. Ein die gesamte Strahlenbiologie umfassendes Lehrbuch wird wegen der auBergewohnlich zahlreichen Aspekte dieses Arbeitsgebiets jetzt und in absehbarer Zeit kaum geschrieben werden konnen. An Sammelwer ken und Handbuchern mehr oder weniger umfassender Art besteht kein Mangel, doch sind diese fur den Anfanger zur Einarbeitung meist wenig geeignet. Ein Titel, der unsere Arbeitsrichtung wie auch den Inhalt des Buches zugleich charakterisiert und abgrenzt, ergab sich zwanglos mit dem Erscheinen des Berichts 'Molekulare und physikalische Biologie' von Dr. M. 1. Zarnitz 1. Auch wenn man uber Inhalt und Abgrenzung einer allgemeinen molekularen und physikalischen Biologie sehr ver schiedener Ansicht sein kann, erscheint uns der Inhalt einer molekularen und physikalischen Strahlenbiologie verhaltnismaBig klar umrissen. Eine Einfuhrung in Aufgaben, Arbeitsweise und Ergebnisse dieses Zwei ges der Strahlenbiologie ist aus verschiedenen Grunden erforderlich.
