Han dokumenterade sina resor och vandringar, främst i Södermanland, med beskrivningar och detaljerade teckningar. I Antikvariskt-topografiska arkivet i Riksantikvarieämbetet förvaras hans rapporter i inte mindre än nio band. Trots att Hermelin ofta citeras i kulturhistoriska skildringar har hans arbeten förblivit opublicerade.
