Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Batavia or Jakarta is a city which has played an important role not only in the history of the region that it is located but also in the history of the world. Since ancient times, Jakarta has been a significant city in world trade. The city's architectural relics which can be considered as evidence of its civilization history are still visible in certain sections of the city although the majority of them were lost. Since the end Second World War, which characterizes the city's independence era, it historically witnessed the era of the ruling states including the Sunda Kelapa Kingdom and Banten Sultanate, then the headquarter town of Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) and later in government Dutch East Indies, and Japanese occupation in turn. Since the cities and their buildings in their urban fabric could be considered as the instruments in conveying, expressing and reflecting their historical background today, it might well be stated that by interpreting and decoding the history of a city it will be possible to develop a sophisticated and strong vision for it. In this respect, the main line of discussion in this paper is based on the existence and physical/architectural characteristics of the city of Jakarta's historical relics that might be used as a base in forming a Freilichtmuseum/an open-air museum or an open air laboratory for architectural history of the city. This can be seen as a first step in developing a sophisticated and strong vision for it which was declared to be a global/world city in 2008.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book starts by discussing Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an artist who became an architect through collaboration with Joseph Krawina. Hundertwasser's works, such as the Kuntshaus and the Spittelau, became emblematic of an alternative design style, one that was freer and more natural than the geometric style it displaced. The next topic of discussion is functionalist style proponent Otto Wagner, who successfully created an alternative design that is now known as Jugendstil style. The influence of this movement is quite widespread throughout the world. Wagner felt that Art Nouveau and Art Deco were at odds with the more traditional historicism. Next we discuss the Emperor's greenhouse in Vienna, particularly the history and style of the Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly House), a structure that was used to invoke a fantastical atmosphere in the Emperor's Tropical Garden. From Austria we shift to the Netherlands and explore the Delft City Canal, discussing the history of the city and the canals that cut through it, which is one of most significant characteristics of the city landscape found in the Netherlands. After this we discuss the riverside village of Overschie, a small village not far from Rotterdam, comparing the face of the past and the present as found there. The next topic is the architectural icon of the Cube Houses of Rotterdam and the concept of 'Living under an urban roof' applied by architect Piet Blom, along with a discussion of the history of the Kubus Woning (cube houses). Still in the Netherlands, we examine the famous Kinderdijk windmill, which is located not far from the city of Rotterdam. Photographs of unique windmills can be seen in this section. From the southern part of the Netherlands we go to Dutch Friesland in the section 'The Small Houses of Hindeloopen,' which discusses the small fishermen's houses in the region. This area was one of the consumers of the VOC's (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie-Dutch East India Company) merchandise. From the Netherlands we go to Germany to examine the image of Weisis-Ossis (West-East) architecture of Berlin, which gives a lot of information about the flavor of this once-divided city. We also examine how the two halves of the city maintained their monuments (denkmal). etc.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This publication was initiated to fulfill the demand for studies on Surakarta-on the authentic elements of the city, its cultural issues, and its urban history, including some cases of vandalism perpetrated against certain historical buildings in the city. These days, the Solonese are increasingly aware of the need to take care of their historical architectural assets. The recent development of the city, conducted according to standards that are based on economics rather than on heritage, has aroused concern in historians, students, researchers, and others who cherish the city's heritage. The city's historical relics must be preserved in better condition. Many students and researchers no longer have access to their objects of study, and the inhabitants miss their old city and its tourist attractions; the images that represented the Oude Stad are gone. To contribute to a better understanding of the city, a team consisting of individuals from ASM (Arsitek Sejarawan Muda), Undagi Laboratory, URDC (Centre of Urban-Rural Design and Conservation), Sebelas Maret University Surakarta, Alumni UNS in Europe, and KPCBN (Komunitas Peduli Cagar Budaya Nusantara) are working together to publish OUDE STAD van SOLO. This book project is a collection of students' research papers on the topic of Surakarta's heritage. The book is divided into four topics: Cultural Issues, Authenticity, Urban History, and Vandalism of Heritage. Questions regarding such matters as cultural issues relevant to Solo's heritage, the urban condition of the city and the mapping of its architectural heritage, which elements in the city are authentic, and the destruction and demolition of Solo's heritage and landmarks are raised. This book contains some of the field studies conducted by the students of Sebelas Maret University. The students made their observations in situ, which allowed them to be aware of the present condition of the city's remaining architectural heritage.
