When Herpin in 1852 published a work which included observations of private patients, he arrived at a much more optimistic view than had prevailed amon…g the former generation. Herpin's book created quite a sensation, and it was partly under its influence that after the middle of the century some physicians were inclined to emphasize the limitations of hospital statistics" (Temkin, Falling Sickness, 2d ed., pp. 285-86; see also pp. 292-93, 305). Herpin was also the author of Des accès incomplets de l'épilepsie (published posthumously in 1867). "Hughlings Jackson, who had become acquainted with Herpin's book of 1852 at a relatively early date in his career, did not come across Herpin's work of 1867 until near the time when his own contribution to epilepsy was all but completed. Then he advised the younger neurologists to study Herpin's writings carefully, and himself quoted copiously from Herpin's observations, for he wished to convince the readers of his earlier reports that they were not mere collections of scientific curiosities. . . . Jackson's generous admission that many of his own statements had been anticipated by Herpin was founded in fact as far as clinical observation was concerned. . . . But here the similarity ended. Herpin remained a clinician studying the course of epilepsy and the opportunities for treatment. His observations as such, anatomical, physiological, and pathological, were valid, regardless of any hypotheses" (Temkin, ibid., p. 327).
