Some marks on text block edges. The 31st annual volume of this well-known short-story collection includes writing by William Faulkner, Mark Van Doren, J. D. Salinger, Shirley Jackson, and many others. This is the first book appearance of "Just before the War with the Eskimos" by Salinger and "The Lottery" by Jackson. The first prize of $300 went to Faulkner, however, for "A Courtship" while second prize of $200 went to Van Doren for "The Watchman." Note that Salinger's bio states that he is thinking of writing a novel but will abandon the idea if he "feels he is abusing what talent he has, or spreading it too thin."
