The standard English-language reference work on French literature, conceived in 1934 by Sir Paul Harvey, compiler of the Companion to English Literature, and completed after his death in 1948 by his co-editor Janet Heseltine. The volume contains some 6,000 alphabetically arranged and extensively cross-referenced entries covering authors, individual works, literary characters, historical figures, places, movements, and allusions from the earliest vernacular texts to the mid-twentieth century. The Revolutionary and post-Revolutionary periods were prepared by Heseltine, the earlier periods by Harvey.
