This descriptive study aims to empirically investigate the reasons for primary subfertility among males, females and for both in a Sri Lankan setting. Findings revealed that sperm quality problems, post-testicular causes, ovulatory problems and premature ovarian failure were seen among among males and females respectively. Negative lifestyle such as; obesity, lack of exercise, unbalanced nutrition and longer duration of primary subfertility are common reasons in both partners. The study findings highlighted the need to identify fertility needs of the couple when they first report trouble conceiving. Este estudo descritivo tem por objetivo investigar empiricamente as razões da subfertilidade primária entre os homens, as mulheres e ambos num contexto do Sri Lanka. Os resultados revelaram que os problemas de qualidade dos espermatozóides, as causas pós-testiculares, os problemas ovulatórios e a falência ovárica prematura foram observados entre os homens e as mulheres, respetivamente. Um estilo de vida negativo, como a obesidade, a falta de exercício, uma alimentação desequilibrada e uma duração mais longa da subfertilidade primária são razões comuns a ambos os parceiros. Os resultados do estudo sublinharam a necessidade de identificar as necessidades do casal em termos de fertilidade quando este começa a ter dificuldades em conceber.
