Nel 1992 un gruppo di neuroscienziati dell'Università di Parma annunciò la scoperta di una nuova classe di cellule nella corteccia motoria dei macachi. Queste cellule, in seguito battezzate «neuroni specchio», rispondevano allo stesso modo sia che la scimmia compisse in prima persona un'azione motoria, sia che osservasse un'altra scimmia compiere quell'azione. Si affacciò subito l'idea, affascinante e plausibile, che questi neuroni avrebbero permesso alle scimmie di comprendere le azioni dei loro simili simulando nel proprio cervello le azioni che vedevano compiere, cioè in qualche modo «sentendole», come se fossero loro stesse, effettivamente, a compierle. Col tempo l'idea si è dimostrata talmente seducente che presto i neuroni specchio hanno abbandonato i macachi e sono approdati nella testa degli uomini, causando una vera tempesta tra gli scienziati di tutto il mondo. Un fiume in piena di studi ha da allora invocato queste cellule miracolose per spiegare praticamente ogni cosa: l'evoluzione del linguaggio, lo sviluppo dell'empatia umana, le basi neurologiche dell'autismo, e poi la schizofrenia, l'abuso di droghe, l'orientamento sessuale, la contagiosità dello sbadiglio e molto, molto altro.
