Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Japanese text with introductory text in English.; 27 x 37.5 cm.; 3.5 kg.; 489 pages with colour and black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jackets shows edge wear, wear marks, scuffs and scratches. Edges slight…ly bumped and turning inwards. Interior with signs of wear namely on the first page which show a tiny mark of what looks like a sticker removed. Previous bookseller sticker glued to the rear of the back cover. Signs of wear on the remaining interior, namely some pages that show signs of have been bent in the past.; "Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha was established during the International Exposition in Vienna held in 1873. One reason for its establishment was the fact that Mr. Owen, Secretary-general of the British Exposition Office requested Jomin Sano, Vice- president of the Japanese Exposition Office, resident in Vienna, to cooperate with a British company, Alexander Park Co., in their project to remove and reconstruct the whole Japanese pavillion to London and sell varieties of Japanese craftwork there. Since its establishment derived from the governmental activity at the International Exposition in Vienna, Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha developed and declined in the context of Japan's representation at the many international expositions which were frequently held in various cities in the world at that time. The art industries exported by Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha were enamelled ceramics, produced in the attached china-painting factory, lacquer were, metal works, cloisonné ware and art embroideries manufactured in the first and the second factories, and other handicrafts purchased from various producing areas all over Japan. This book contains a number of designs of the products made in the attached factory. These designs are undoubtedly the realization of the idea of art industry. They preserved the traditional style of Japanese paintings, while removing aspects not to the taste of Western people. The company's products and goods purchased from all over Japan were not only exported to the above-mentioned Alexander Park Co. but also sold at overseas international expositions as well as through the New York Branch which was opened on the occasion of the International Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and through the Paris Branch which was opened on the occasion of the International Exposition in Paris in 1878. Now, however, there are only a few articles left which can be confirmed to have been produced by Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha. I have never researched in the U.S.A., but in Europe I found out only one bronze vase, on which flowers and birds are inlaid, in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The company's production and export rapidly increased due to the execution of the art industry promotion policy by the Meiji Government. However, the business was not profitable, and the company was actually maintained by the financial support of the Government. Financial difficulties were never solved, and the company was finally dissolved in the summer of 1891 when governmental support was cut off. We can say that Kiritsu Kosho Kaisha, which was born, and then disappeared in the context of the governmental idea of art industry, was part of the art industry promotion policy itself." excerpt from the introductory text by Toyojiro Hida.
