Reports on technical progress and clinical results are encouraging, even though they have often raised patient expectations to an unrealistic le…vel. The operative methods available to us today enable corrective osteotomies to be performed with a high degree of accuracy and success. Precisely because the sequelae of trauma are so difficult to schematize, every case must be evaluated individually based on a critical assessment of subjective complaints, diagnosis and prognosis before a decision can be made. The planning and execution of corrective procedures are carried out with the same meticulous care as for idiopathic limb deformities. However, the occurrence of a traumatizing event with its immediate and long-term complications calls for special insight in the setting of therapeutic goals. It is essential that the patient be appraised of the results that can reasonably be expected and of the risks that are involved. Success in therapeutic procedures requires detailed theoretical knowledge, thorough operative training, and a strong commitment on the part of the surgeon. It is these aspects of the corrective surgery of posttraumatic deformities with which the editors are principally concerned.

Die uns heute zur Verfiigung stehenden operativen Methoden erlauben Korrekturosteotomien mit groBer Genauigkeit und Erfolgsaussicht. Gerade weil Traumafolgen kaum zu schematisieren sind, muB aus kritischer Abwagung von subjektiven Beschwerden, Diagnose und Prognose fiir jeden Einzelfall erneut eine in dividuelle, angemessene Entscheidung getroffen werden. Die Planung und Ausfiih rung korrigierender Eingriffe wird mit der gleichen Sorgfalt wie idiopathischen Ach senstorungen erfolgen. Dennoch bedingen traumatische Vorschaden und damit aktu elle und prospektive Komplikationen die Einsicht in das richtige MaB therapeuti scher Zielsetzung. Deswegen kommt auch dem aufklarenden Gesprach mit dem Ver letzten eine so wesentliche Bedeutng zu, urn das erreichbare Behandlungsergebnis und das individuelle Risiko aufzuzeigen. Die adaquaten therapeutischen Verfahren setzen eingehende theoretische Kenntnisse, griindliche operative Ausbildung und hohe arztliche Verantwortung voraus. Diese Vielschichtigkeit bei Korrekturoperatio nen aus traumatischer Ursache aufzuzeigen, ist ein vorrangiges Anliegen der Heraus geber. Das Thema der Korrekturosteotomien nach Traumen an der unteren Extremitat wurde bei einem Symposium abgehandelt, das wir aus AniaB des 65. Geburtstages von Professor Dr. lorg Rehn veranstaltet haben. Ihm wird die BuchverOffentlichung in Dankbarkeit gewidmet. Die Tagung hat eindrucksvoll die Fahigkeit und Bereit schaft zur Zusammenarbeit von Chirurgen und Orthopaden bewiesen.
