Flat signed by the author in black ink to the head of the front endpaper with the date 14.1.29. and the inscription, 'Truly Yours'. The text supported by a number of other photographic reproductions. In a later hand is another neat inscription in red: 'To Robert Wilson, Esq.; with best wishes. John M. Murdoch.' Some splitting to the front inner hinge exposing a little webbing - the front board remains firmly attached. A scarce 2nd edition copy flat signed by the author.

8vo, first edition, pp,viii,231, tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece, illustrations of facsimile letters, red cloth titled in gilt to the spine and black titling to the upper cover, light age-toning to the cloth binding but remains a very good copy of an uncommon item. The text draws significantly on Burns' personal letters and poetry to provide a more vivid portrait of his character. It includes references to specific historical documents such as the minutes of the St. James Lodge of Tarbolton, where Burns was a member of the Freemasons.
