This booklet story of Fort Steilacoom's transformation from a frontier military fort on Puget Sound to Western State Hospital. Fort Steilacoom was established in 1849 and used as a military outpost, supply depot, and refuge until 1868. In 1870, the Washington Territory bought the garrison buildings for use as an "insane Asylum for Washington Territory". The first patients (15 men and 6 women) arrived on August 19, 1871, Congress approved the donation of Fort Steilacoom to Washington Territory in 1874. In 1915 the name was changed to Western State Hospital There is a bibliography. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit environmental restoration and education. Signed by Author(s).
