This report from the Center of the American West is the result of their venture into an important dimension of regional life--Energy in the West: What Every Westerner Should Know. As interested, and sometimes confused, citizens and consumers, the authors have tried to use their status as newcomers in the field of energy as an advantage. They conclude that energy is the economic, the environmental, the political, the social, and the cultural issue of our time, and that the West is the place where key decisions about this issue will occur. Their recommendations include housing developments that encourage the use of public transportation and reduce reliance on cars, public investment in infrastructure for the delivery of renewable energy, and a recognition that some reconciliation must happen between support for renewable resources and desire to keep all the West's open spaces undisturbed and intact. Wind turbines and solar collectors disrupt a landscape, reminding us that no energy source comes without its own disadvantages. CU Boulder's Center of the American West was founded in 1986 by Patty Limerick, and CU Law Professor Charles Wilkinson. The Center of the American West serves as a forum committed to the civil, respectful, and problem-solving exploration of important and often contentious public issues. In an era of political polarization and contention, the Center strives to bring out "the better angels of our nature" by appealing to our common loyalties and hopes as Westerners. As part of its mission, they strive to increase awareness and knowledge about a variety of issues we face as Westerners by hosting a diverse array of public events each year. In its Academic Programs, they sponsor a wide range of opportunities, giving students the chance to venture beyond classrooms and textbooks and to interact with leading scholars, writers, public servants, and faculty members. These opportunities include their Western American Studies Certificate Program, Grace Kempton Student Dinners, Internships, Hoffman Scholars, Thompson Awards for Western American Writing, and the Beardsley Family Scholarship. The Center of the American West works on a variety of regional issues as diverse as the West itself. They include energy, immigration, public lands, water, wildfire, and much more! We have a library of Resources to help the public navigate the often complicated underlying issues the Nation faces. In addition, the Center has published numerous books. Second Edition [stated].
