Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Not clear on what edition this is, could be a first. Signed by both authors on the title page 'Best wishes! Pete Hilgartner', 'Sam Ginder' (see photo). As you can see from the photos, the covers are in excellent condition. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is quite bright. I don't see any wear that needs to be called out. The book is square and very solidly bound throughout with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I scrolled through the pages several times without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any creasing. There is a tiny nick off the outer edge of ten or so consecutive pages, nothing much of anything, no tears. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the two signatures, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. There are a good number of illustrations, mostly old photographs, including one of the author's friend Jackie Bouvier (who would later of course become Jacqueline Kennedy). The author met her through his pal Hugh Auchinicloss, Bouvier's stepbrother. He admits to having had a 'secret crush on Jackie.' All of the photos are in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is in excellent condition. It is exceptionally clean. Again, I don't see any wear that needs to be called out. The flaps are in excellent condition. The jacket is not priced or clipped. This book won the United States Marine Corps Gazette 2005 Francis Fox Parry Combat Initiative Award. From the dust jacket: 'Highpockets Hilgartner is a recognizable and, well respected name in the Marine Corps. The story of this Marine's development into the combat leader he became is not just inspiring-- it will continue to motivate emerging Marine leaders well into the future. Combat leaders are not born, nor do they necessarily show up when they are needed. The Marines who served with Peter Hilgartner were very fortunate to have someone of his caliber and experience when the fighting became desperate.' 'Highpocket's War Stories serves two important purposes. It eloquently describes Peter Hilgartner's coming of age, first at the Naval Academy, then in the Korean War, and later as a skilled combat infantry leader in the Vietnam War. It is also a powerful articulation of the basic leadership fundamentals that became the foundation for his success in a difficult and demanding series of important infantry battles.'.
