Hard Back. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Deming, Edwin W. (illustratore). First Edition. 191 Pages. Library markings on front and back endpapers. Front cover and spine show some wear. Printed text is in blue, tight pages, and is free of marks. Lots of color illustrations from Edwin Deming. Having lived among Indians in various parts of the country for many years, Therese O. Deming is in a position to write authoritatively on Indian life. In this Indian Life Series she has contributed a truthful picture of everyday family-life as she observed it within the home and the Indian community. Mrs. Deming has an unusual understanding of the real nature of the red man, and this is shown in the way she has interpreted the true spirit and atmosphere of Indian life. The episodes in the books of this series are based on notes entered in her diary while she was living among the Indians. This book is a story of the adventures of two little Indian boys whose homes were birch-bark wigwams in the woodlands. It can be read with ease by third-grade children, but, like the other books of this series, it will also be read with interest and profit by the children of higher grades.

This book presents a revolutionary method for measuring the quality of writing in young people, proposing a scale that allows for the precise evaluation of English composition by students. The author, a respected expert in the field, provides a detailed account of the development of the scale, explaining the methodology and statistical techniques employed. The scale is derived from a large corpus of student writing, and its reliability and validity are thoroughly demonstrated. The book also delves into the theoretical underpinnings of the scale, exploring the complex factors that influence writing quality and the challenges involved in assessing it objectively. This groundbreaking work has profound implications for educators and researchers, offering a much-needed tool for measuring writing proficiency and advancing our understanding of the nature of writing ability. Its insights will undoubtedly shape the future of writing instruction and assessment in educational institutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Edwin W. Deming (illustratore). 1st Edition. I'm not sure whether this is a First Edition. Laidlaw Brothers is supposed to use a number line (presumably ending in 1) as the identifier of their first editions. I'm a little surprised by that, because it's unusual for a book published in 1930 to have a number line. Also, the few other sellers identifying their copies as firsts are not making any reference to a number line. My hunch is that they are making the assumption that it's a first based on the fact that there are no additional printings referenced on the copyright page. That is the case with my book. 1930 is the only date on the copyright page. The covers of my book are identical to those of the sellers with books published in 1930. There was a 1958 edition with covers that look quite different. And there are a few sellers who are listing a 1931 edition. It seems quite possible that, in this instance, the first edition is the edition with 1930 and no additional printings, particularly since there are so few copies around. The only non-library 1930 edition that I'm seeing is selling for $125.00. So I'm pricing mine at around half that despite it's very solid condition. If you're trying to find a first edition, I would contact the other sellers and inquire as to what they are basing their identification upon. As you can see from the photos, the covers of this book are quite clean. There are two tiny spots on the front (first photo) and a little soiling off the bottom edge of the rear (third photo). The edges and corners of the covers are in very good condition, as are the illustrations on the front. The spine ends have a little bit of fraying. Importantly, the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover, nicely tight pages, absolutely no binding issues. The interior of the book is in very nice condition. The pages are quite clean. In fact, I'm not finding any soiling as I scroll through them. There is some light toning at the margins. There are color illustrations on every page. The colors are vivid and the illustrations are evocative. The letters are printed in blue, not black. I saw only one tiny corner crease and it's on the blank rear end paper. I did find three pages with a small tear off their top edge. In each instance the tear did not reach the illustration or print. One tear was 1/8th of an inch, one was 1/4 of an inch, the last was 1/2 of an inch. There is a very small faded stamp on the rear side of the blank rear end paper. It's the kind of stamp some book sellers or stores create, with a few numbers and letters. There are no other markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments in the book, no bookplates. Unlike many of the other copies for sale it is NOT ex-library. Finally, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. From the Introduction 'The author of the Indian Life Series has written from first-hand information an account of the true spirit and atmosphere of Indian Life. After living intimately with various tribes of Indians for many years, Therese O. Deming tells a simple story of Indian day family-life within the teepee and the community. She tells of the early methods of travel, of the Indians' mystical religion, and of their cultural traits. Indians who have read the stories say that this is the first written account of their traditions and manner of living which has been done in such a true fashion as to be worthy of being handed down to their own descendants. The stories have been prepared under the direction and supervision of Professor Milo B. Hillegas of Columbia University. The illustrations are from water-color paintings by Edwin W. Deming, who in his boyhood determined that his life objective should be to record in pictures the old-time life and customs of the American Indians. Mr. Deming lived for many years among various Indian tribes and was adopted into the Blackfoot tribe. His paintings of Indian life have made him famous as an artist.'.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Edwin Willard Deming (illustratore). 1st Edition. First Edition (SD, NAP; F. A. Davis= NAP). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The author, Alden O. Deming, has flat signed her name on the title page. The book is illustrated by the artist Edwin Willard Deming. Alden Deming was the daughter of Edwin. Milo B. Hillegas, Professor of Education, Emiritus, Teacher's College, Columbia University, is referenced as the editor. The book contains sixteen illustrations, six of which are color illustrations, including the frontispiece. You can see the covers in the photos. The front cover has a good deal of toning, as does the spine. The rear cover has toning and yellow spotting. The blue lettering on both the front and spine is bright. The edges are in solid shape, a little bit of fading on the bottom ones. The two top corners have light rubbing. The front bottom corner has a spot of rub-through. The top and bottom spine edges have some rubbing and a few tiny bits of rub-through. There is one dark spot at the top page edge. Happily, it does not migrate onto the actual pages. I saw only one or two pages with a speck of a spot at their top edges. The book is square and solidly bound from cover to cover. Most of the pages are nicely tight. There are no cracks or spaces to be found between any of the facing pages. There are no binding issues with any of the pages. The covers are very well bound and nicely tight as well. The inside covers and end papers are a light green. They are toned at all of their margins. On the whole, the pages are quite clean, with only a very occasional spot, nothing on the print. There is one spot on the title page just off the middle edge. The glossy pages with the color illustrations are all in excellent condition, very clean and I don't see any wear. There's no foxing. There is only light toning at the margins of the text pages, not really much at all on the glossy illustrations. All of the sixteen illustrations in the book are in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any creasing on any of the pages. There are no attachments. And the author's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. There is one marking, a little stamping, the kind you occasionally see the from a bookseller. It's on the blank verso of the last page in a faded black and reads: 5) W 1.17. I have no idea what that might relate to. Inventory? There are no other markings to be found anywhere in the book. And that covers the condition. Take a look at the photos. Signed by Author(s).
