Five of these species are endemic to the islands; four are new records for the archipelago; the remaining 30 species are adventive; and two species previously thought to be adventive are now thought to be endemic. The discovery of this high proportion of endemic scale insects (13%) is significant; the Canary Islands are one of the few regions in the world where such a high proportion of endemic scale insects has been found, and the other areas are all biodiversity hotspots.
