Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. "Reported and Published by William Hincks and F. H. Smith." Printed by Buell & Blanchard. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Thirty-seven pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, moderate foxing, and slight chipping along spine. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet contains a report of a commemorative banquet held in honor of George Washington. A brief introduction explains the planning behind the banquet which is followed by a description of the banquet's decor, notation of who attended, and printed addresses given by some of the attendees. Among the people in attendance were President of the United States Senate William R. King, Robert F. Stockton, G. W. P. Custis, Judge Wayne of the U.S. Supreme Court, Winfield Scott, Abraham W. Venable, John L. Taylor, and Senate Chaplain C. M. Butler. King is the first person to speak and begins his address by acknowledging the likely challenges the U.S. will face as its population and its geographic area increase and how the U.S. Constitution and the Union may be "severely tried, by mistaken construction, reckless violation, or insidious corruption." However, amid these concerns, he looks to George Washington as an inspirational figure not to be forgotten. King states the only object of the occasion of the banquet is to remember the virtues of Washington's character. The report notes an intermission of music and then relays a speech by Mr. Crittenden. Crittenden also praises Washington and contrasts him against people such as Caesar, Napoleon, and Cromwell. He says that while the latter three "inflame the passions of men, by the story of their fields and fame," Washington "occupies a different, a serener, a calmer, a more celestial sphere" without "that turbulence, and excitement, and flare, which constitute glory, in the vulgar and worldly sense of the term." He commends Washington for being loyal to the Union and the idea that it remain united. He also praises Washington's opposition to foreign influences and his support of a non-interference policy. Washington did not want the U.S. to forcibly interfere with or wage war against other countries. Crittenden says instead the U.S. should act as a role model for other countries and argues that interference will only lead to endless war. Throughout the speech are brief notes of music, toasts, and the like. Then, Thomas H. Bayly gives a speech. Bayly notes two modes by which human rights are improved, by permission from a monarch to the people and by revolution. He says the U.S. must be an exemplar of successful self-governance. Judge Wayne speaks about Washington and says that what set him apart were his virtues. He says that Washington's military skill is to be celebrated but that his virtues are what really made a difference. General Scott honors soldiers of the American Revolution. He references the recent Mexican-American War and the War of 1812 and pays tribute to the U.S. military whom he credits for the relatively peaceable era the U.S. is currently in. King briefly speaks again. Other speakers were Mr. Toombs, Thomas Ritchie, and Custis who also commemorate Washington and relay historical events connected to him. Appendix is on Pages 23-37.
