Particular topics covered include town sites, their overall layout, street patterns, defences (castles, walls and gates), markets, trades, churches, chapels, monasteries, suburbs, property boundaries and houses. Above all, this is a practical guide to the study of medieval town plans.Dr Paul Hindle took early retirement in 2000; he was previously a Senior Lecturer in Geography. He is Honorary Secretary of Manchester Geographical Society. He has written widely on roads, maps and the Lake District. Besides all this, he founded the world's first popular museum of natural science and art. Peale's life exemplifies the American experience in the eighteenth century. His paintings~ more than a thousand canvases~ present a superb record of colonial and federal society. Beautifully reproduced here are paintings of Maryland's planter families and Philadelphia's mercantile elite, prosperous New Yorkers and aristocratic Virginians, Revolutionary War leaders and America's first statesmen, scientists and explorers. In mid~life Peale turned to the study of nature and assembled a museum in Philadelphia that was, in its time, the most important institution of its kind in the country.
