A collection of essays by seven British and American critics, including contributions by William Carlos Williams, David Daiches, and others, this volume was issued as Stanford University's contribution to the celebration of the centenary of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." According to the laid-in Stanford press release, it was "the first critical re-examination of Whitman's reputation to be made in many years." The spine has very light wear at the heel's corners, and a slight buckle at the top, but otherwise the exterior is in excellent shape. There is a small brown mark on the front pastedown, and the top edge is just beginning to fox, but otherwise the text is very bright, clean, and unmarked. The VG dustjacket has some toning near the cover edges and on the spine, some wear and slight chipping across the top, on the spine heel and the corners, but is otherwise solid and whole, with good color. A beautiful copy with historic provenance of a landmark in Whitman scholarship and appreciation.
