The book is a realistic "panorama novel" that traces the history and struggles of the Estonian people from the early 20th century through 1940. It follows several generations of a clan of fishermen, the Tikhus, on the island of Saaremaa. The narrative covers the 1905 Russian Revolution, the building of the sailing ship Kaugatoma, the Russo-Japanese War, and Estonia's eventual occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940. The work is noted for its vivid depiction of maritime life, coastal customs, and the psychological resilience of islanders. Considered a major achievement of Soviet-era Estonian literature, the work earned Hint the State Prize of the Estonian SSR twice (1950 and 1967). -- Uno Roosvalt (born 1941) is one of Estonia's most famous landscape artists, specifically known for his obsession with coastal life and islands. Much like Aadu Hint spent his life writing about the sea, Roosvalt spent his career painting it. He has a deep personal and artistic connection to the same islands Hint wrote about. While Hint focused on the narrative of the Saaremaa people, Roosvalt's visual language captures the melancholy and isolation of those remote Estonian outposts.
