Paperback. Condizione: New. Recent years have witnessed a (re)surfacing of interest on the interaction of morphology and syntax. For many grammatical phenomena, it is not easy to draw a dividing line between syntactic and morphological structure. This has led to the assumption that syntax is the module responsible not only for deriving syntactically complex phrases but also for deriving morphologically complex items, both in inflection and word formation. There are however also good reasons to think that syntax is not involved in all morphological processes and that there are consistent areas of morphology that are independent from syntactic processes. This book presents a collection of papers where phenomena from Romance languages and varieties are analysed under contrasting views on how morphology and syntax interact. All the contributions follow the aim to investigate what the analysed phenomena tell us about their structural make-up and the grammatical processes involved.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover, viii + 400 pages, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show gentle handling wear, faint scratches, shelfworn marks. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Morphology, and in particular word formation, has always played an important role in Romance linguistics since it was introduced in Diez's comparative Romance grammar. Recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in inflectional morphology, and current research shows a strong interest in paradigmatic analyses. This volume brings together research exploring different areas of morphology from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. On an empirical basis, the theoretical assumption of the 'Autonomy of Morphology' is discussed critically. 'Data-driven' approaches carefully examine concrete morphological phenomena in Romance languages and dialects. Topics include syncretism and allomorphy in verbs, pronouns, and articles as well as the use of specific derivational suffixes in word formation. Together, the articles in this volume provide insights into issues currently debated in Romance morphology, appealing to scholars of morphology, Romance linguistics, and advanced students alike. -- Contents: Morphological Theories, the Autonomy of Morphology, and Romance Data / Marc-Olivier Hinzelin & Sascha Gaglia; A Paradox?: The Morphological History of the Romance Present Subjunctive / Martin Maiden; Verb Morphology Gone Astray: Syncretism Patterns in Gallo-Romance / Marc-Olivier Hinzelin; Friulian Subject Clitics: Realisation and Paradigmatic Structure / Sascha Gaglia; Romance Clitic Pronouns in Lexical Paradigms / Christoph Schwarze; Hiatus Resolution Between Function and Lexical Words in French and Italian: Phonology or Morphology? / Luigia Garrapa; Occitan Plurals: A Case for a Morpheme-based Morphology / Patrick Sauzet; Partial or Complete Lack of Plural Agreement: The Role of Morphology / Natascha Pomino; Noun Inflectional Classes in Maceratese / Tania Paciaroni; Participles and Nominal Aspect / Eva-Maria Remberger; Modifying Suffixes in Italian and the Autonomy of Morphology / Heike Necker; SE-verbs, SE-forms or SE-constructions? Condizione: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 400 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book is about the nature of morphology and its place in the structure of grammar. Drawing on a wide range of aspects of Romance inflectional morphology, leading scholars present detailed arguments for the autonomy of morphology, ie morphology has phenomena and mechanisms of its own that are not reducible to syntax or phonology. But which principles and rules govern this independent component and which phenomena can be described or explicated by the mechanisms of the morphemic level? In shedding light on these questions, this volume constitutes a major contribution to Romance historical morphology in particular, and to our understanding of the nature and importance of morphomic structure in language change in general.…
