This English translation was made from the French by Bernard Frechtman. Drawing heavily upon Noma's own wartime experience, the novel presents the harsh world of the Imperial Japanese Army through the experiences of ordinary soldiers subjected to institutional cruelty, rigid hierarchy, punishment, and dehumanization. The story centers on a soldier who returns to his unit after imprisonment and finds himself once again trapped within the oppressive machinery of military life. Noma's treatment of the Japanese military establishment made the novel an important contribution to postwar Japanese literature and to literary examinations of authoritarianism and war. The English edition was published by The World Publishing Company in 1956 and comprises 317 pages.
