PAPERBACK, very good, front lower corner dinged but book appears little used if at all. HIRSCH, DAVID H. The deconstruction of literature: criticism after Auschwitz. Providence, R.I: Brown University Press, 1991, 1st printing number line 54321, x, 314pp., . Criticizes deconstructionist literary theory because it is anti-humanistic and negates value, historical truth, and the worth of individual experience. Notes that Heidegger embraced Nazism as in tune with his philosophy; that French deconstructionists who experienced the German occupation prefer to repress this memory; that Paul de Man published antisemitic articles in Nazi journals in 1940-41; and that Hans Robert Jauss served throughout the war in the Waffen-SS in Eastern Europe, though he claims to have known nothing of the Holocaust. Argues that deconstructionism's negation of truth, its proposition that language by its very nature serves deception, is convenient for persons with such a background. Points to affinities between deconstructionism and the recontextualization of the Holocaust in revisionist historiography, in which the point of view of the victim is replaced by that of the accused. Asserts that deconstructionist literary critics have ignored Holocaust literature because they devalue the real experience of human beings. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism). - CONTENTS: Penelope's web -- Paul de Man and the politics of deconstruction -- Martin Heidegger and pagan gods -- Paul de Man and the poetics of prevarication -- French shame and the new theory -- Collaborators and deconstructors -- Deconstruction and the SS connection -- Marxism, humanism, and literature in the university -- And what are you, reader? -- Metaphors and structures -- Speech acts and the language of literature -- Postmodern or post-Auschwitz : the case of Poe -- Deconstruction and humanism after Auschwitz. 9780874515664 ISBN 0874515661.

Hard cover in very good condition with gray boards, deep red spine cloth and silver gilt spine lettering. Mellow age toning to the boards; top text block lightly dust toned; interior text block clean & tight; no writings, no markings noted. End papers depict strings of barbed wire. Dust jacket in very good condition showing shelf and edge wear; small chips at head and heel of spine and at top left front. Not price clipped: there is no price as per usual with University presses. 185 numbered pages. * From the jacket front flap, "Commemorative in spirit and artistic in form, "Auschwitz" convincingly portrays the paradoxes of human nature in extreme circumstances. With consummate understatement Nomberg-Przytyk describes the behavior of concentration camp inmates as she relentlessly and pitilessly examines her own motives and feelings. In this world unmitigated cruelty coexisted with nobility, rapacity with self-sacrifice, indifference with selfless compassion. The book offers a chilling view of the human drama that existed in Auschwitz.".
